The work day started out like any other—turn on the office PCs, pop lunch in the fridge, get a pot of coffee brewing. But this was no ordinary day. This was the day that everyone fears will come: the computers don’t work. In our case, our server decided to take the redeye to Tahiti with no note.

We tried everything: turn the computers on and off, press every button with a light on it, smash the keyboard with both hands (which fixes somewhere around 90% of computer problems, you know). Zilch. The server was done for. Thankfully we were prepared for this sort of situation by having multiple backups in place for all of our company data. But it set us back a couple of days and left us relying on tedious manual bookwork. If nothing else, it was a stark reminder of how spoiled and reliant we are on technology. It got us thinking—it’s easy to take the convenience of technology for granted.

What can you do, as a business owner, to protect yourself from tech snafus? How do you preserve your image when your digital life goes on the fritz? Communication is key! Whether your point of sale system crashes or your entire network goes up in flames, you have a duty to your customers to keep them informed of the situation. Social media is a fantastic tool to send a quick message to consumers about the issue and what you’re doing to resolve it. Transparency is key in maintaining the trust your customers have in your brand.

Here are a few things to consider when rolling out an urgent tweet or snap:

  • How does this problem affect your customers?
  • What are some of the other ways customers can contact you if they have an immediate need?
  • Do you have an ETA on a resolution?

And remember, it’s always easier to plan ahead of crisis than it is to try and scramble after one happens. Have a crisis communication plan in place and accessible to relevant employees. Make sure your team knows the plan backwards and forwards, and make updates to it throughout the year to accommodate any changes in company policies.

Mother’s day is this weekend.  A time for kids of all ages to acknowledge their moms with either flowers, a gift or a brunch somewhere.  Thanks mom for all that you do!  Yes I don’t believe you truly understand what it’s like to be a parent until you are one.  Each generation had that example of what a mother should be and tried to live up to it.  The 50’s generation had Leave it to Beaver, 70’s had the Brady Bunch, 80’s Rosanne and now we have The Middle and Modern Family.  Pretty much a broad spectrum of range of mothers to choose from.   We say were are going to do things differently, but sometimes behavior is just engrained into you.  I have caught myself saying “because I said so!” which most kids can’t argue with, even though they try.

One thing I have realized after being a parent for 23 years is that it never stops.  I thought once they graduate from high school or college they go off with their lives, visit mom and dad, and life goes on.  But unfortunately things happen, wrong decisions made and you worry, worry, and worry.  You worry more about one then the other at times, but then the light bulb comes on that your mother did the same thing.  She fed you, clothed you, wiped noses, cried, laughed, and worried about all the crazy stuff that we did as kids!  Thank goodness there were no camera phones or facebook back then!  Your mother is a real person with feelings and emotions and probably hasn’t stopped worrying about you, even though you’re approaching 50, you’re still her baby and always will be.  So this Mother’s day, take the time to really thank your mom for everything she has done for you and continues to do for you, which at this point maybe a lot of praying.  Happy Mother’s Day everyone!


Did you survive the mobile-geddon??  What you don’t know what that is????  It’s not too late to save yourself!  Mobile-geddon  was created when Google announced that on April 21, if your website is not designed to be responsive/mobile, it will not rank has high as those websites that can be searched from a mobile device more than likely a phone.

Your website needs to be mobile friendly now in order for Google to give it a good rating and hopefully land on that first page when searched.  What does Mobile friendly mean?  Websites with large text, easy-to-click links, which resize to fit whatever screen they are viewed on.  If you don’t have these built into your website, your ranking will fall behind those who do.

Our phones are our life line to almost everything from movie times, to restaurant hours, to car repair.  About 60% of online traffic now comes from mobile and Google wants to users to have a good experience when we click on that mobile link to get movie times.  Isn’t that what you want for your website?
